About Me

I suppose my art journey started when I was a child. I was born in Ohio in 1987 and the only child of a single mom who did her best. I spent a lot of time alone, so I had to find things to pass the time. I was never an outdoorsy, sporty type. I was more the mousey, reserved type who liked finding things to do on my own. Being shy, I took to painting and crafting because it was something I could do socially without really being social.

I did all kinds of art when I was a kid, but when I was in middle school I became obsessed with realism and copying pictures of boy band members in my lined notebooks. I got pretty good at pencil drawings, and then once my mother became ill when I was in my teens I didn’t pick up a pencil again until my late twenties.

People would tell me I had an artistic eye, and I’d tell them that “I used to be an artist”. One day in 2015 while working for an artist as a receptionist I thought “Why don’t I just draw again?”

I got back into pencil drawings and realism but soon realized I didn’t care enough about keeping my subjects totally accurate. I started painting with watercolor, doing more illustrations with just ink pen, and began experimenting with abstract art and more surreal pieces.

I wouldn’t call my work outright abstract, since you can usually see the subject but I do like to warp my subjects with paint when the piece calls for it. My illustrations are still realism but not so extremely accurate to life they still have a bit of uncanniness to them, I think.

For the past ten years, I’ve gained an affinity and love for watercolor and ink works. I think it’s where my strengths are, but I also like to challenge myself. I started to do larger pieces and things in different mediums like sculpture and fiber arts.

My process for pieces varies. I usually use thick watercolor paper that can take a lot of water and paint layers. I prefer to use Daniel Smith Fine Watercolor because it blends well and creates more pure hues.

I usually explore darker themes in my art. A lot of my pieces are about my experiences as a child or about being an unsure adult in a weird world. At the same time I do a lot of illustrations that are in lighter in tone and even sometimes fanart if I’m in the mood.

I have been featured in a few exhibitions and I’m usually somewhere around my town doing an art market to sell my pieces. I’m currently working on pieces that are larger, more colorful, and more abstract than my past works. I’m always trying to do different things, and keep myself busy and creating.
